Stephen Ryan – MC
MC for the Gardening & Food Festival stage talks
My passion for gardens and gardening started at just the tender age of 10 when I started working in my father’s nursery. Today I own my own nursery called Dicksonia Rare Plants in Mount Macedon and open my garden for selected garden tours. Planted within my garden and nursery, are three national collections for the Garden Plants Conservation Association Of Australia (Plant Trust) – Cornus, Sambucus and Acanthus.
My media experience covers article writing for magazines and newpapers, I was host of Gardening Australia for three years and still host a regular radio slot on Melbourne’s 3CR.
As a plant hunter and traveller I’ve been to many parts of the world including Namibia, India, Pacific North-west of the USA, England, Ireland, South Africa, Peru, New Guinea and France and Argentina. And I’ve led tours to Madagascar, Reunion, Mauritius and North-west France.
When I’m not in the nursery, I travel extensively, and will be leading a tour with ASA Cultural Tours in October 2016 to Madagascar.
I’ve published three books on rare plants that have received rave reviews and my manual contains over 2000 entries of rare plants available in temperate Australia. I’ve also contributed to the two large tomes produced in Australia Botanica and more recently Flora.
In 2001 the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria recognised me with a John Pascoe Fawkner Gold Medal for Distinguished Service to Horticulture.
And since the age of 19, he’s held the position of President of Mount Macedon Horticultural Society – so come and have a chat with Stephen if you see him at the show – he’s a mine of information!
